Burning books and burying Confucian scholars took place in the Qin Dynasty in ancient China. In the 34th year of the First Emperor of Qin (213 BC), Chun Yuyue, a senior official in the imperial court, opposed the "system of prefectures and counties" then in practice and demanded that the sons be conferred on different levels according to the ancient system.

Li Si, the prime minister, refuted this, and argued that "Confucian scholars" (scholars) should be forbidden to regard the past as different from the present, and that those who wanted to learn decrees should rely on officials as their teachers.

The next year, in 212 BC, the magicians Hou Sheng and Lu Sheng, who were searching for the elixir of immortality for Qin Shi Huang, fled after they failed to find the elixir and slandered the emperor.

Upon hearing this, the First Emperor of Qin was enraged and ordered a visit to Xianyang.

He burned pseudoscientific books and buried pseudoscientific philosophers.
